Uhm in theory there is a mistake in the way the pillar rotates, i.e. its shape should also change, as it's not vertical and I'm fairly sure it is the leaning thing, not the camera being inclined. But to be honest the aesthetic, the movement, the smoothness are so gorgeous I don't give a damn about that. Maybe the effect it's even made on purpose: to me it gives a sort of non-euclidean bizarro geometry.
Yep, I've put Lovecraft together with Revolutionary Girl Utena
Yep, I'm a crazy person.

Why would the shape change? Its a solid cylinder and there is no change in perspective. The camera is going up along the stairs which is why everthing in the scene moves around the axis of the pillar.

Uhm what you said would be right if the pillar was vertical. If the steps are horizontal, and the camera is in line with em (and I think it is or Utena would appear inclined), rotating around a diagonal-ish pillar... Damn how to put it? You would see It becoming verticale, then leaning toward the left, then vertical, then leaning back toward right, etc... Sorry, im terrible at explaining xD. But to be honest, I said mistake but was thinking more to a surreal artistic effect, as I said back in the comment second part. Of course I can be wrong too (even if for once I'm sure enough xD)

I know what you mean but i dont think that is the case here since the camera is moving in spiral (and diagonally), so the distance from the pillar to the camera is always the same. If it was simply rotating you would be right.

Uhm, could be... aaugh I can't say I'm convinced, to be honest XD. But oh well, point of views, right? ... ehm no pun intended -facepalms-

I think maybe I'll re-think this stuff another time and with a more clear mind :)
